The registration form and sponsorship letter can be downloaded here.
Nearly everything in Jamie Melos' special education classroom at Merton Williams Middle School can be traced back to the Hilton Central School District's annual budget: smart boards from the technology fund; furniture from general operating expenses; salary and benefits for Melos and her colleagues.
Then there's Stewie.
Some school districts might have $130 budgeted specifically for a Russian tortoise, or $15 for nesting material made of coconut fiber, but Hilton isn't one of them. Instead, Melos applied last year for a small grant from the Hilton Education Foundation, established in 2006 to fund student scholarships and teachers' pet projects. In this case, that meant an actual pet.
Monroe County school districts are increasingly looking to independent education foundations as a way to fund small ventures and tap community interest.
The sums are generally trifling in the context of the districts' overall budgets; the 13 organizations combined paid out about $100,000 in 2015-16, meaning the questions of funding equity raised elsewhere in the country are not as pointed here. The increasing prevalence of the foundations, though, comes partly in response to tightening school budgets, in which nonessential expenditures like pet tortoises are under pressure.

Pigs on Parade is a major fundraiser for the Cadet Cupboard
The third annual “Pigs on Parade” is underway and open to anyone interested in designing and painting a piggy bank. The pigs will come to life this fall when placed around town to collect change for the Cadet Cupboard, a food pantry for Hilton Central School District students in need of nutritious meals.
The Hilton Education Foundation is seeking artists to be involved with this fundraising event and to consider painting and/or decorating one of these specially designed pigs provided by the Foundation.
In November, the completed pigs will then go on parade at a designated stores in the Hilton community.
Once in place, the community is invited to partake in feeding the pigs with their favorite food – money!
For more information on participating in this important fundraising event, contact Tim Gagnon, Hilton Education Foundation member, at 392-1078 or email hef{at}hiltoneducationfoundation.org. For more information on Cadet Cupboard, click here.

What is it? Pigs on Parade is a community fundraiser sponsored by the Hilton Education foundation to help support the Cadet Cupboard
How does it work? Community members design an original, “work of art” ceramic piggy bank. The banks will be placed in local businesses from approximately from November through January to raise money and awareness for the Cadet Cupboard. They will then be auctioned off at Comedy Night Under The Stars in January at Deerfield Country Club.
Is there a cost involved? The Piggy banks will be supplied by Foundation. Paints and optional materials will be at the expense of the artist.
Important Dates:
Pick up - Wednesday September 14, 7:00 Board Room Quest School
Pig Completion Due Date November 9, Board Meeting 7:00 Board Room Quest School
(November through January- Pigs on display at local businesses)
HEF Comedy Night Under The Stars January 21, 2017 Piggy Banks
Tips, ideas & suggestions:
Think of it as a “work of art” that will get people excited and they will want to bid on
Utilize Hilton’s rich history
Come up with a funny title or theme (possibly utilizing pig, pork, swine, etc...)
Take advantage of a current event, book, movie, celebrity, etc…
Be careful not to add things that can be easily knocked off, broken or block the opening for donations. These will be in public locations with a lot of movement around them.
Things to avoid- holiday themed pigs and logos or business names on pigs

Hilton 2014 graduate places second at New Balance Nationals
Tyler Ranke walked across the stage on June 28, but it’s running that the Hilton graduate is now known for. The young athlete capped off his senior year with a state championship in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:11.24 and his third All American title, which is unprecedented in Section V.
In June, Tyler came in second in the 2000-meter steeplechase at the New Balance Nationals, Greensboro, NC with a time of 5:51.31. His season ended with him being ranked #2 in the nation for the 2000-meter steeple chase and #2 in the nation for the 3000-meter steeple chase.
Throughout his high school career, Tyler has competed in eight state meets and five national meets. He holds the school record in the 1600-meter run, 3200 meter run and 3000-meter steeplechase and every class record in the same events. He is also an eight-time All Greater Rochester winner and has numerous titles at the league and county levels.
“Tyler exemplifies what we all want in our student athletes and has always represented himself, his family and our community in an outstanding manner,” said Athletic Director Michael Giruzzi. Throughout his high school career, Tyler was coached by Jeff Merkel.
Tyler was recognized at the June 24 Board of Education meeting for his accomplishments as a student athlete. In the fall, he will head to the University at Albany on a Division I scholarship.

Beautifully handcrafted bowls are now in homes all throughout the community after the incredibly successful Empty Bowls Project held at Village Elementary School on March 5. The event raised over $2,100 for the Hilton Cadet Cupboard, The Bridge of Rochester and Heifer International. Every third, fourth, fifth and sixth grader created a bowl to donate to the event. For $5 per family, participants received a handcrafted bowl and a simple meal of soup and bread. The bowl serves as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger and was created by The Imagine Render Group, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that strives to create positive and lasting social change through the arts, education, and projects that build community. Students at all three elementary schools created bowls from a variety of materials - clay, plaster, paper maché - some of which are useable and other just decorative. The proceeds from the event will be divided evenly between the three charities. Cadet Cupboard is a food pantry for the students in the Hilton Central School District. Children in need are provided with essential, nutritious food that they can subtly take home and safely prepare on their own. The Bridge of Rochester is a team of dedicated staff and volunteers who share the common goal of empowering individuals and families who are homeless in Monroe County while seek community solutions. And Heifer International links communities and helps bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas around the world with a long history of poverty. The event drew 600 guests and about 45 volunteers that included parents, staff, high school students, and Village fifth and sixth grade students. Students created a total of 1,200 bowls. For the next two weeks, remaining bowls are available for $5 each in the libraries at the three elementary schools. Students also sold colorful ceramic hearts for $1 each, created decorations for the event and responded to questions like, "What does hunger mean?" on index cards posted throughout the hallways. Special thanks go to Campbell's and the Hilton Family Restaurant for donating 600 servings of soup; Hilton Food Service for donating bread; and the Hilton Rotary Club for donating bottled water.
A New Scholarship has been added to the scholarships page. The Hilton Applefest Scholarship is now available To recognize students who have given their time, talent, and treasure to the Community. This scholarship is hosted by the community.
Comedy Night under the Stars draws record crowd!
A snowy night didn’t keep a sold-out audience of 250 people away
from the Hilton Education Foundation’s Comedy Night under the
Stars held Jan. 25 at the Hilton Firemen’s Exempt Hall. Attendees
enjoyed a social hour with time to peruse the silent auction offerings,
purchase 50/50 raffle tickets and enjoy dessert before Comedian
and High School English teacher Marc D’Amico hit the stage with
the Funky Bunch, an improvisational comedy group of high school
students Amy Farrell, Jay Manivong , Kara Phillips and Donovan
Walker, and 2013 graduates Alex Braggins and Noah Pierce.
The feature act, Phyl Contestable, also known as Reverend Mother,
“roasted” members of the audience and had everyone singing her
own version of “My Favorite Things.” “You don’t stop laughing
when you get old; you get old when you stop laughing,” she told the
audience.
Social Studies teacher Chris Monfiletto kept the evening moving
along as master of ceremonies, and the High School Jazz Combo MC
& C Christopher Marsaw and Michael Wall performed throughout
the evening.
Special thanks went to Wegmans, which generously donated $2,500
to the event, along with 2014 Comedy Night sponsors: Campus
Construction Management, Harris Beach PLLC Attorneys at Law,
Hilton Apple Fest, Hilton Family Pharmacy, Infusion Sales Group,
Kimmins Coffee and Summit Federal Credit Union.
The Hilton Education Foundation has provided more than $47,059
in support to Hilton students and teachers, including $16,079 in

children in need with food that they can take home on the weekends
